Workshop description: Learn how to create and share a narrated slideshow online including recorded audio synchronized to selected photographs or images. We’ll discuss different examples of narrated slideshows and review effective processes for facilitating student narrated slideshows. Websites and tools for creating narrated slideshows we will explore include VoiceThread,SlideShare, and SonicPics for iOS.

Option #1 SlideShare

Features:

  1. Web-based / browser-based
  2. Free
  3. Mobile friendly (including iOS devices)
  4. Audio sync is optional, can be added and changed later

Ingredients:

  1. Free account on SlideShare.net
  2. Upload PowerPoint or Keynote Presentation as PPT or PDF
  3. Record audio for presentation (battery operated digital audio recorder recommended)
  4. EDIT SlideShare, click to create SlideCast. Upload mp3 audio and sync to slides.

Option #2: SonicPics

Features:

  1. iOS application only (iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch)
  2. Free version limited to 3 images, 10 minutes
  3. $3 version unlimited images and time
  4. Exports video file which can be shared to sites like YouTube

Ingredients:

  1. iOS device (iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch)
  2. Download and install app
  3. Take photos on your iOS device or transfer photos to a photo album
  4. Directly upload video file or transfer to laptop/desktop computer for sharing

Option #3: VoiceThread (and ed.VoiceThread)

Features:

  1. Web-based and iOS app-based
  2. iOS app is free
  3. Supports moderated community commenting with text, audio and video
  4. Can be private or public

Ingredients:

  1. Free or paid account on VoiceThread or Ed.Voicethread
  2. Images for your story
  3. Microphone to record (webcam optional, text comments with keyboard also possible)
